Rising sign calculator

Your rising sign, your Moon sign and the house each planet falls in, from your birth date, time and place. Worked out with real astronomy right here in your browser; nothing you type leaves this page.

What a rising sign is

Your rising sign, or ascendant, is the sign that was coming up over the eastern horizon at the minute you were born. Your Sun sign is the one you read in magazines; it changes about once a month. The rising sign changes roughly every two hours, which is why two people born on the same day can have very different charts.

In a chart the rising sign starts the 1st house, the one about how you come across, how you start things and the first impression you make before anyone knows you. People often say their rising sign feels more like them in a room full of strangers than their Sun sign does. Read what each one is like on the 1st house page.

Why your birth time matters

The sky turns a full circle every day, so the rising sign moves through all twelve signs in about 24 hours. Half an hour can be enough to move it into the next sign, and the house lines move with it. A time from a birth certificate is best. If you only know "around noon", try a few times near it and see what stays the same.

Without a time you still get your Sun sign, nearly always your Moon sign, and the signs of every planet. The Moon moves about 13 degrees a day, so on some days it changes sign; the calculator tells you when that happened on your birthday.

Sun, Moon and rising

Astrologers call these three your "big three". The Sun is what drives you, the Moon is how you feel and what makes you comfortable, and the rising sign is how you meet the world. Together they say more than any one of them alone. The houses add the where: which part of life each planet keeps busy, from money to partners to work and reputation.

How this calculator works

It works out the sky for the minute and place you were born, the same way the Skycup app does on your phone: the tropical zodiac and Placidus houses, the most widely used house system. Your birth time is turned into world time with your birthplace's own time zone history, summer time included. The positions of the Sun, Moon and planets come from published orbital formulas; the rising sign and house lines match the app's own math to a fraction of a minute of arc.

Everything happens in your browser. The list of places is loaded from this site, and your date, time and place are never sent anywhere. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are in the app; this page shows the seven planets you can see without a telescope.

Then read your cup against it

Skycup reads your coffee grounds or tea leaves against this chart and the sky at the minute you send the cup, and marks every shape on your own photo. Readings are written by AI, for fun and a little reflection. Coming soon to iPhone and Android. Meanwhile, read how to read coffee grounds or browse the 46 cup symbols.

Questions

Is the rising sign the same as the ascendant?

Yes. The ascendant is the exact degree rising in the east at your birth, and the rising sign is the sign that degree falls in.

What if I don’t know my birth time?

Tick "I don’t know my birth time". You’ll get your Sun, Moon and planet signs but no rising sign or houses, since those depend on the time to within a few minutes.

Why is my rising sign different on another site?

Usually it’s the birth time or the time zone. Check that the time is local clock time and the place is where you were born. Sites that use a different zodiac, like the sidereal one, also give different signs.

Which house system does it use?

Placidus, like the app. Very far north or south, where Placidus has no answer, it falls back to Porphyry and says so.

Do you keep my birth details?

No. The calculation runs in your browser and nothing is sent. The site counts visits to its pages in total, without cookies; see the privacy policy.
